Sir:-

I am directed by the Marquess of Lansdowne to

inform you that upon the receipt of your letter of the

30th ultimo His Majesty's Minister in China was con-

sulted by telegraph whether your representative at

Pekin might return to Shanghai without prejudice to

the negotiations for the Canton-Kowloon Railway.

I am to state that a reply has been received from

Sir E. Satow expressing the opinion that the continued

presence of your Representative at Pekin is desirable.
